Help get CEPA amendments across the finish line!
Ask your MP to pass Canada’s first law recognizing environmental rights
Bill S-5 is nearing the finish line! This long-awaited legislation updates the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and recognizes the right to a healthy environment for the first time in federal law. The David Suzuki Foundation and our supporters and volunteers have been campaigning for this since 2014.
The Senate passed Bill S-5 last spring. The House of Commons environment committee studied the bill and approved it, with amendments.
The bill now faces a final vote in the House of Commons before it becomes law.
Send a message to your MP to vote YES on Bill S-5.
Preventable exposures to toxics and pollution take a constant toll on human health, contributing to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes, cancer and other chronic conditions. Globally, ambient air pollution alone is responsible for 8.8 million premature deaths per year — a “pollution pandemic.”
The Environmental Protection Act is supposed to guard against these threats, but it hasn’t been updated for more than two decades.
Bill S-5, as amended, is a starting point for much-needed improvements to the act.
Join the call for MPs to pass Bill S-5 as soon as possible this spring. Strong environmental laws will be the backbone of a just transition to a clean and inclusive economy.
